The weather co-operated once again with lots of sunshine and temperatures more conducive to summer although South Alberta weather is notorious for throwing a monkey wrench into one’s weekend activities.
. It wasn’t all that long ago that the drivers were quite glad to slide into their racing outfits just to keep warm. It seems to me that around opening day I heard someone muttering about installing a heater into a sprint car; could’ve been just my imagination. Well, after a three year drought, the 360 Sprints were back on the track, and they put on a show. The competition was heavy and the winners really had to turn up the taps to gain the positions they got. It was interesting to know that we had entries from Camrose to Fort McMurray; all of which were very determined to become King of the Clay at Bridge County. The stands were filled and the fans got their money’s worth. We even had an impromptu sprinter show up in the infield although it wasn’t all that likely that anyone in the stands witnessed it. Without even the aid of Methanol, it probably had a faster acceleration rate than the fastest sprint car. At least in the zero to thirty range. Safety equipment would’ve been lacking as well. But it wasn’t in the mood for competition anyways; it just wanted to keep from getting run over. But it did manage to put on a show for some of the weaker minded in the vicinity. Of course we cannot forget the Trucks, Stock cars and Claimers; they’re here as often as possible and they drive their hearts out accomplishing a lot with reduced to almost non-existent horsepower. And the main events, with the competition for first lasting the entire race, were well worth watching. Saturday night at the races sure beats Saturday night in front of the TV or standing in line at the movies for so long that when you reach the ticket counter, you’ve forgotten which movie you wanted to see. See you at the track!
