Skid Remarks - June 20, 2009

You couldn't have wanted a nicer day for racing than last Saturday.
Mostly sunny, with temputures in the upper 70's ( mid 20's for you 1970's type), and very little wind. There were some threatening clouds that rolled in from the southeast but the gods prevailed and allowed the racing to proceed.
Racers from Calgary, High River, Brooks and other places from outside the region were there to compete for that sometimes elusive trophy that tells the world that their racing skills were a tad bit better (luckier) than the next in line. Many teams do everything they can to give Bridge County Raceway a place on their schedule. I might add that there were a couple of drivers racing on the dirt for the first time; one of them did quite well.
The atmosphere in the pits was very relaxed which is always welcome; no one needs to get at someone else’s throat until they at least get on the track, then it’s no holds barred. Well, within limits, no one wants to get disqualified either. The teams were excited about racing but still were able to have fun or just take it easy prior to that first green flag.
The name of the game out on the track tonight seemed to be: “How many marker posts can you hit?” There were more caution flags flown for white posts on the track than actual wrecks. There were still plenty of touch and bumps leading to spinouts to keep things exciting but it had to be a toss-up as to who took out the most posts, Street Stocks or Modifieds.
And the Claimers were back in full battle regalia, including a minivan (?). Well, Jeff, at least you got rid of the toys, the child seats and the groceries, but wasn’t that a go-go coffee mug on the dash? The Claimers always put on a good show and the competition for that checkered flag was just as stiff as it was for the other classes.
All in all, Saturday night was well spent at the track. The racing game never gets boring; there’s always something different going on that makes the short trip worthwhile.
